Using WiFi Free in Singapore

By now, its probably well-known that Singapore is advocating free wireless internet access islandwide (till December 2009)! But before you get too excited about it, the coverage is pretty much confined to public access areas such as shopping malls, cafes, libraries etc.

It's very much driven by the InfoComm Authority (IDA) of Singapore, and allows you to use free WiFi of up to 512kbps at 3 operator sites - SingTel, Qmax and iCell.

How to sign-up?
A simple way would be to reach Singapore first, go to a hotspot which is served by any of the 3 operators and sign-up for your free account.

(this means free wifi is available!)

Within the hotspot,

• check that your Wireless Device is enabled, then select "Wireless@SG" from the list of wireless networks within range - SSID.



• launch your web browser. You should automatically see the Wireless@SG log-in page.

A typical login page would look like any of the ones below. The key words Wireless@SG and the operator name would be obvious from the site.


From the login page, you click on a link to sign up your free WiFi account right away.

Signup using Mobile Phone

Another way is probably easier. Just manually select the network you are roaming on to SingTel Mobile (See How to roam in Singapore). Next key *186 and dial. You should expect to receive a FREE SMS displaying your FREE WiFi account. The account should show your mobile number as the User ID and an automatically generated password.

Next, select the wireless network with the SSID defined as Wireless@SG, and launch your browser. Select SingTel as your service provider, key in your FREE account and you are ready to go!

How's good is Wireless@SG?
If you ask me, I am pretty ok to free things but don't expect your connection to FLY!
